Melodie

Melodie is a Computer Science student at one of Sydney’s leading universities. Like many Year 12 students, she had a lot on her plate while preparing for her HSC, and learning to drive understandably took a back seat as she focused on her studies.

After completing high school and beginning her bachelor’s degree, Melodie decided it was time to turn her attention back to driving and work towards gaining the independence that comes with having a licence. Alongside her university studies, she also works part-time as a tutor, helping high school students with their own academic journeys.

By the time Melodie came to Tailwind Driver Training Academy, she already had a fair amount of driving experience. She was initially referred to us when she needed to hire an instructor’s car for her first driving test attempt. Unfortunately, despite her experience behind the wheel, she narrowly missed out on passing on that occasion.

Rather than allowing the setback to discourage her, Melodie decided to use the experience constructively. She booked a driving lesson with us so we could assess her driving, identify any areas that could be improved, and help her prepare more effectively for her next attempt.

It quickly became apparent that Melodie was already a very capable and confident young driver. She had a good understanding of the road, was comfortable controlling the vehicle and demonstrated sound decision-making in most situations. She didn’t need to relearn how to drive — she simply needed some targeted refinement to bring her driving up to the standard expected during the test.

During the lesson, we focused particularly on driving best practices, observation techniques and vehicle control. We worked on ensuring that observation checks were timely, consistent and clearly demonstrated, while also refining some aspects of her vehicle positioning and control. These may seem like relatively small details, but during a driving test, consistency and good habits can make a significant difference.

What impressed us most was Melodie’s ability to take feedback on board. She completed just one lesson with us, then continued practising with her parents, consciously applying the techniques and recommendations we had worked through together.

When the day of her second driving test arrived, the improvement was evident.

Melodie didn’t just pass — she achieved an exceptional score of 98%!

Going from the disappointment of an unsuccessful first attempt to achieving such an outstanding result the second time around is a fantastic accomplishment. More importantly, it demonstrates what can happen when existing driving experience is combined with focused feedback, purposeful practice and a willingness to fine-tune the little things.

We are absolutely thrilled for Melodie and delighted to have played a small part in her journey. With university, tutoring and an exciting future ahead of her, she can now enjoy the additional freedom and independence that comes with being a licensed driver.

Congratulations, Melodie, on an outstanding result! We wish you many years of safe, confident and enjoyable driving ahead.
